Having a sideline in designing/installing networked home theatre equipment, I get to test out a crap-ton of hardware players. In order to get the expected behavior on the most players, we decided to set both. What are some examples of players that don't honor Forced properly? And the current implementation displays disabled Forced Only, creating confusion. (To ease the transition, there could be a Preference for current appreciate the objective, but the methodology makes it impossible to have correct behavior, whereas separate options would have no such drawback. ![]() Those who want correct behavior could set them separately. ![]() Those who want current behavior could set both. Thus it seems to me that the "safe" route would be to allow the two flags to be set separately in MKV output. Default comes into play when the watcher wants something other than Forced. That's because correct default behavior is to only play the Forced track, leaving it up to the watcher to select full subtitles if desired. Is your basis for "most people expect"? My research indicates that there's considerable confusion, in part because documentation is incomplete and hard to parse, and that many people do expect Default and Forced to be different-they are, after all, different flags with different meanings, and I have seen considerable use of the Forced flag in the correct way.Īs for default behavior, VLC will only play by default the Forced track (which is correct)-any other behavior has to be configured or selected by the watcher.
